Arkansas Scenic Trails to Drive this Spring

Feeling in a rut from being stuck indoors? There’s no better fix than taking advantage of the warmer weather to get out on some of Arkansas’s scenic drives. Trust us, your vehicle could probably use the exercise, too. Here are some of our favorite routes in the Natural State.
Pig Trail National Scenic Byway
The Pig Trail National Scenic Byway offers views of the Boston Mountains in the northwest part of Arkansas’s Ozark Region. Rich colors are on offer here nearly year-round, from pastel floral blooms in spring to hues of red and orange in the fall. The drive is 19 miles long and can be accessed off exit 35 on I-40 Westbound. From there, take Arkansas State Highway 23 through Franklin County to its intersection with Arkansas Highway 16 at Brashears in Madison County.

Crowley’s Ridge National Scenic Byway
Crowley’s Ridge is a unique geological formation that stands 550 feet above the alluvial plain of the Mississippi embayment in the Delta. Millions of years of natural erosion and the accumulation of soil deposits helped Crowley’s Ridge rise slowly above the surrounding farmlands. The national road runs through both Arkansas and Missouri, with 198 miles of it located in our state. All manner of attractions are available to travelers on the byway, from Native American Sites and Civil War battlefields to old-fashioned country stores and, of course, natural beauty!

Sylamore Scenic Byway
The Sylamore Scenic Byway winds around mountainsides, with richly populated forests and stark cliff faces creating lush views for any driver. The route starts at Blanchard Springs Caverns in Fifty-Six and travels to the White River at Calico Rock for 26.5 miles. East Calico Rock began as a trading post for French traders and trappers along the white river. The original Ghost Town settlement is known as “Peppersauce” for its local moonshine production. 20 buildings still remain from the original settlement and can be seen from the street by foot.
