Jeep Celebrates 80 Years

October 25th, 2021 by

Jeep celebrated its 80th anniversary this year! From 1941 to 2021, Jeep wasn’t always a legend, but this legend earned its title. Landers Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram wanted to help commemorate all of Jeep’s accomplishments throughout the years. Here are some cool events from the last 80 years we thought were important to highlight. We’ll start with what happened in 1941.

The Beginning and Wartime

Let’s remember the start. 1941, for a quick detour to the past, was the year the U.S. joined World War II. It was also the year Willys-Overland started producing a military vehicle for the U.S. government. These Jeep MBs would reach over 350,000 vehicles produced within four years. Within that time, the civilian counterpart was also put into production.

1945 and the Jeep 4×4

Four years later, the CJ-2A became the civilian version of the original Jeep, but with a few modifications. A spare tire was added, as well as larger headlights, a fold-down tailgate, and a power take-off unit. This mass-produced four-wheel-drive vehicle became the first of its kind. This is the beginning of Jeep life.

The First Jeep Jamboree

The first Jeep Jamboree, an event to represent the camaraderie among Jeep enthusiasts, was held in 1953 with 155 participants. This event was only the first of many Jamborees that would lead to events on trails all around the U.S. including the Rubicon Trail in the Sierra Nevada mountain range.

The Cherokee

In 1979, in the midst of an energy crisis, the idea of a smaller 4×4 was created and would come to fruition in 1984 with the Jeep Cherokee XJ, the world’s first compact SUV. The goal was met by creating a smaller SUV without sacrificing too much interior space.

Breaking through Detroit

During the 1992 North American International Auto Show, the 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee was driven through the glass front doors of Cobo Hall, a literal breakthrough for the vehicle. The SUV was driven by Chrysler president Bob Lutz, and the event was to show how the Grand Cherokee kept its comfort and handling through any terrain.

Electric Evolution

The most recent addition to Jeep history is the switch to electric. The 4xe is another attempt at Jeep’s goal for groundbreaking 4×4 vehicles. The Jeep life will only be extended to others with this green aspect. Jeep wants to grow its community with another capable ride.
