Jeep Previews Compass & Renegade Plug-In Hybrids

Are you ready for two plug-in hybrid Jeeps? They’re coming sooner than you think.

Jeep is continuing to evolve with the Renegade Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV) and Compass PHEV. Both vehicles made their debut this week at the Geneva International Motor Show in Geneva, Switzerland.

A statement from Jeep says:

“A no-compromise hybrid solution, which integrates the unmatched technical layout of each Jeep SUV, will power both the Jeep Renegade and Jeep Compass and will turn them into vehicles that provide absolute freedom while taking their capability to the next level through some of the most advanced eco-friendly technology.”

The Renegade and Compass PHEVs are powered by a battery that is rechargeable from an external power outlet which allows for more stored electric energy. The battery works alongside a 1.3-liter turbo gas engine in both vehicles. It delivers 190-240 horsepower in the Renegade. Numbers for the Compass PHEV are similar with a top horsepower of 240.

The Renegade and Compass PHEVs will give killer off-road performance too. The electric motor offers greater torque and the ability to adjust that with accuracy during take-off and when driving on rough terrain.

Both PHEVs also use new electric all-wheel-drive technology (eAWD). Traction to the rear axle is provided through a dedicated electric motor, not a prop shaft, to allow both axles to be separated and control torque independently and more effectively than a mechanical system.

The driver will have access to all off-road and hybrid information with a dedicated instrument cluster and infotainment screen in the Renegade and Compass PHEVs.

From the looks of both vehicles, you won’t really be able to tell they are PHEVs unless you get close. The Compass and Renegade have a special “4x4e” badge on the liftgate as well as special “4x4e” hood graphic.
