Jeep Unveils a Plug-in Hybrid Wrangler at CES in Las Vegas

This year at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles delivered several models of plug-in hybrid vehicles, including hybrid versions of the Wrangler, Renegade and Compass. All the plug-in Jeep models carry an all-new “Jeep 4xe” badge, a play on the term “4×4” used to indicate vehicles with four-wheel drive systems. We’ve heard rumors about the plug-in hybrid Wrangler for a few years now, and in 2019 spies caught it out during some routine testing. Finally, Jeep put the 4xe models on display, and we’ve gotta tell you: we like what we see!
The Jeep Wrangler is currently available with an eTorque hybrid powertrain option, but that only improves fuel economy slightly while offering an enhanced driving experience. The all-new Jeep Wrangler 4xe will offer a plug-in hybrid system and promises to be the most efficient and environmentally responsible Wrangler ever. The manufacturer believes that the hybrid powertrain will offer a “quiet, open-air freedom” all while improving performance and four-wheel drive capability with greater torque and faster engine response.

The 4xe models of the Jeep Wrangler, Renegade and Compass are all part of FCA’s plan to become a leader in eco-friendly automotive technology. The first step of their plan is to offer electrification options on all Jeep models by 2022, all of which will carry the “4xe” badge. FCA currently only offers one plug-in hybrid vehicle: the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivan. The Pacifica Hybrid differs from other hybrid vehicles in that the battery can be charged when the vehicle drives (particularly during braking) or by a power cord. Once fully charged, the Pacifica hybrid has an all-electric range of 32 miles. Beyond the electric-only range, the vehicle runs on both gasoline and battery power using internally generated electricity.
FCA hasn’t confirmed when Jeep 4xe models will be available for purchase, but more information will be available at the Geneva and New York auto shows. At Landers Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, we’re pretty psyched to have a 4xe model of every Jeep. We’ll be anxiously waiting for more information as the Geneva Auto Show is underway!
