We’ve already told you about our love for the classic “Bullitt” and that car chase scene, and this week we want to treat you with another classic: “Vanishing Point.”
We’re not talking about the 1997 remake with Viggo Mortensen, although that film was OK. We’re talking about the 1971 original cult film starring Barry Newman, Cleavon Little and that sweet 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T.
Kowalski (Newman), a car delivery driver, is hired to drive the Challenger from Colorado to San Fransisco. After he picks up the car, Kowalski makes a bet with friends to get the muscle car to its final destination in less than a day.
Naturally, Kowalski get into trouble with a few motorcycle cops and a full-on police chase ensues. Along the way, Kowalski meets Super Soul (Little), a blind DJ who helps him elude the cops via the Challenger’s dash radio.
Full disclosure: this film isn’t one you should watch with the little ones. It’s a bit of a trip with a lot of action and not much dialogue. As one extended car chase, “Vanishing Point” is a cult classic that every car buff should see at least once.
