Which Jeep Wrangler Engine Is Right For Me?

August 28th, 2022 by

The new Jeep Wrangler is one of the most customizable vehicles on the road. From factory options and colors to aftermarket accessories, there are rarely two Wranglers alike. One of the biggest decisions you have to make when buying a new Jeep Wrangler is the engine choice. This can drastically change your driving experience behind the wheel of the new Wrangler. There are five powertrain options available, and while you can’t go wrong with any of them, each engine can be special for a particular kind of driver.

The standard engine for the new Wrangler is the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6. This is a tried and true powertrain that delivers 285 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque. It can tow up to 3,500 pounds and achieve 17 miles per gallon in the city and 23 miles per gallon on the highway. There is no upcharge when choosing this engine, and it is also the only way to get a manual transmission on the Wrangler. Each of the other engines is paired exclusively with an eight-speed automatic transmission. If you like to shift your own gears, make sure to choose the 3.6-liter V6. This engine can also be optioned with eTorque, which is a mild hybrid system that does not change the power numbers but increases fuel economy to 19 miles per gallon in the city and 24 miles per gallon on the highway.

The next engine choice seems to be the most popular across new Wrangler models. The 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder is a punchy option with good fuel economy. This engine has 270 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque and can tow the same 3,500 pounds as the V6 engine. This engine achieves 21 miles per gallon in the city and 24 miles per gallon on the highway.

You can go the distance with the available 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6. This is one of the first times we have seen a diesel engine in a Wrangler, and it is fun to drive! This diesel engine has 260 horsepower and 442 lb.-ft. of torque. You can tow 3,500 pounds with this hearty diesel engine and pass by the pump more often with 22 miles per gallon in the city and an impressive 29 miles per gallon on the highway.

The most futuristic powertrain is found on the new Wrangler 4xe. This is a plug-in hybrid Wrangler that sports special blue accents and whisper smooth acceleration. The Wrangler 4xe pairs the 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with a battery and electric motor to achieve 21 miles on an all-electric charge and a 370-mile driving range on a single tank. With a rating of 49 MPGe, you may think the Wrangler 4xe would be a slouch, but you would be wrong! With 375 horsepower and 470 lb.-ft. of instant torque, you can save the planet and have a blast at the same time.

Lastly, the Wrangler Rubicon 392 is the powerhouse of the lineup. The legendary 6.4-liter Hemi V8 has been stuffed into the Wrangler to make for one rowdy off-roader. With 470 horsepower and 470 lb.-ft. of torque, the Wrangler Rubicon 392 can rocket from 0-60 miles per hour in just 4.5 seconds. If you ever find yourself at a drag strip in your Wrangler, you’ll see a quarter-mile time of 13 seconds. This engine pairs well with the Xtreme Recon Package!
